What does it mean to "Adopt a Shark"?

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Adopting a Shark is a fun and unique way to get involved in shark and ray conservation. AdoptaShark is an excellent program for adults and kids because everybody learns A LOT about sharks and the oceans. Adopting a shark means that you will get to know your tagged shark and follow it as it moves around the seas. As we learn new information about your shark, we will pass it on to you via our website. Bear in mind however, that the tracking tags will only be attached to each shark from 3-6 months, after which time we/you will no longer recieve new tracking information for that shark. Even so, you will be able to study the maps that  were generated when the tags were 'live' and in no time, you will be a virtual expert on your shark. You will learn things like… Read more...

  • Where does it like to live during different times of the year?

  • Does it like to sleep at different depths during the day and the night?

  • What does it like to eat?

  • Why does it move from one place to the next?

  • Where will she have her babies?

  • How many babies will she have?

  • As a species, is it dangerous to people?

  • Is it endangered or threatened?

You will also receive special invitations to Shark functions that we create for you several times each year, and you will even get invitations to join us on one of our official Shark Tagging Expeditions - at a discount!

Our mission is not just to provide you with enough Shark information to float a battle ship, but if you're an avid Shark Enthusiast, we want to feed that hunger as well.

So join us and adopt a shark for the curious child in your life, the guy who has everything or your ocean-loving friend. They'll appreciate this gift for a long time to come!

Quoting Camlin Mitchell:
When do I get to know where Skarsboard is?

Regarding Scarsboards' Location:
Scarsboard was tagged using an 'accoustic' tag which means that he has to be followed around in order to track his movement. [We have a receiver on a boat to accomplish this.] Meanwhile, Scarsboard was recently sighted off Guadalupe Island. Unfortunately his tracking map is off-line until our people get back to the mainland to revise it. But we are so happy to learn of your interest in the beautiful Scarsboard! Thank you!

Now I'm guessing Scarsboard has been sighted off the coast of Guadalupe Island, but not yet tagged.
Will he be tagged sometime soon?

I'm very interested in his migration patterns, where he's feeding/mating traveling etc.

Hello there,
My husband and I would like to be a part of what you are doing. We have always had a love of the ocean and sharks. We have a small business which is a winery called Masquerade wines, any chance you would trade expenses for wine to join the trip?
thank you,
Jennifer Kimmerly
